My name is Dave, I am 29 years old and I am a car-a-haulick. I can remember my first oil change at age 10 and I got my first taste of some fine oil imported right from the oil pan of a 1972 Chevelle. Since then I have been hooked! I have a beautiful wife and 2 beautiful daughters Aubrey and Victoria Chevelle (yes that is her legal name). When I was growing up, my dad was working on a 1941 Willys 4 door and I used to help all the time. When I turned 14 my dad said when I was your age my dad gave me my first car, I cant get you any thing new, but give me a idea of what you want when you get your license? I told him I want that old Chevelle behind the house and that was it, it was mine. By the time I had my license it was repainted, running good, and winning trophies at cruz nights. As any first car, it got dented dinged and raced every weekend. Off the road it went in 1999. It’s been a long road with buying a house, new job, and kids; but slowly I started working on it with no outside help just me and a lot of long nights. It was a total frame off (ie: powder coated frame stainless bolts new sheet metal). It was good that I didn’t have the money to do it all at once as I think it might of got rushed instead of spending all night polishing stainless bolts that no one will ever see. I did try to weld ½ quarter panels on but just didn’t like the results so that was the one thing I did have to send out to someone to do. As for everything else from paint design to buying a sewing machine to do the interior work to air brushing flames it was all me. Almost everyone says who did this or who did that and I tell them I did (and I have 1000’s of pics to prove it) they say where’s your shop as much as I wish I did have one or even worked in one I don’t but I’m hoping to some day. So to everyone, here are some pictures and some words to all just starting out, try doing it yourself and take your time. This is the first year that my car has been out to shows, some small and some bigger ones, its not about trophy’s its about the people and the love for building cars. If I got discouraged this season for not winning a trophy I would of never made it to my 2nd cruse for example at the smaller cruses the judges pass over me saying that’ some high dollar car and at the bigger shows all the high dollar rides win. What keeps me going is being proud to say I did it all myself and that’s the true love of doing it.
